Installation Procedure
1. Remove the Equipment Drive Shaft.Refer to the Previa Repair Manual for additional removal and disassembly procedures.
2. Clean the Equipment Drive Shaft.
A. Snugly fasten the Equipment Drive Shaft in a vise.
NOTE:
^ Do not overtighten the propeller shaft tube in the vise.
^ Never clamp the bearing with a vise.
^ Never hit the bearing with a hammer.
B. Using an air nozzle, remove the dust from the flexible coupling, cleaning mainly around the centering seal.
NOTE:
Do not use cleaners on the flexible coupling.
3. Remove the front flexible coupling.
A. Paint alignment marks on the flanges of the bearing and the propeller shaft tube.
NOTE:
Do not place alignment marks using a punch, etc.
B. Remove the 6 bolts, washers and nuts.
C. Insert a screwdriver through the flexible coupling hole (from the flexible coupling side to the bearing shaft flange side), then apply rotational force to disengage the flexible coupling collars from the bearing shaft.
NOTE:
Hold the bearing firmly to prevent it from falling.
D. Remove the bearing shaft assembly.
NOTE:
^ Do not damage the centering pin.
^ If work is stopped at this time, cover the centering section with a shop rag.
E. Insert the screwdriver through the flexible coupling hole (from the flexible coupling side to the propeller shaft tube side), then apply rotational force to disengage the flexible coupling collar from the flange.
4. Remove the rear flexible coupling.
A. Paint alignment marks on the coupling flange and the shaft flange of the propeller shaft tube.
NOTE:
Do not place alignment marks using a punch, etc.
B. Insert the screwdriver through the flexible coupling hole (from the flexible coupling side to the coupling flange side), then apply rotational force to disengage the flexible coupling collar from the flange.
NOTE:
Hold the bearing firmly to prevent it from falling.
HINT:
If the coupling flange is hard to disengage from the flexible coupling collar, remove the flexible coupling from the propeller shaft tube, then fasten it in a vise to remove the flexible coupling.
NOTE:
Do not overtighten.
C. Remove the coupling flange.
NOTE:
Do not damage the centering pin.
D. Remove the 3 bolts, washers and nuts.
E. Insert the screwdriver through the flexible coupling hole (from the flexible coupling side to the coupling flange side), then apply rotational force to disengage the flexible coupling collar from the flange.
5. Clean the bearing, the propeller shaft tube and the coupling flange.
A. Using an air nozzle, remove the dust from the engagement surface of the flexible coupling collar.
B. Using a shop rag, wipe off the dirt on the bearing and the centering pin of the coupling flange.
NOTE:
^ Do not use any cleaners.
^ Protect the centering section of the propeller shaft tube from being contaminated with dirt.
6. Install the new rear flexible coupling.
A. Connect the new flexible coupling to the shaft.
B. From the flexible coupling side, install the new bolts and washers, then tighten the 3 new nuts from the propeller shaft side.
Torque: 33 Nm (340 kgf cm, 25 ft lbs)
NOTE:
^ Bolts, nuts and washers are not reusable.
^ Fix the bolt on the flexible coupling side, and tighten the nut on the propeller shaft tube side.
^ Use caution not to deform the flexible coupling.
C. Use half of the grease provided in the kit on the tip of the centering pin of the coupling flange.
D. Insert the centering pin of the coupling flange into the propeller shaft tube.
NOTE:
^ Make sure the alignment marks line up.
^ Do not damage the seal of the propeller shaft tube with the centering pin.
E. Using the old nuts and bolts, tighten the flexible coupling to the coupling flange, engaging the collars, then remove the bolts.
Torque: 15 Nm (150 kgf cm, 11 ft lbs)
NOTE:
^ Insert the bolts on the flexible coupling side, and tighten the nuts
^ on the propeller shaft tube side.
^ When fastening to the crank shaft, use new nuts and bolts, then torque to 33 Nm (340 kgf cm, 25 ft lbs).
^ Do not deform the rubber bushing of the flexible coupling by twisting.
7. Install the new front flexible coupling.
^ Insert the bolts on the flexible coupling side, and tighten the nuts on the propeller shaft tube side.
^ Do not deform the rubber bushing of the flexible coupling by twisting.
C. Use the other half of the grease provided in the kit on the tip of the centering pin of the bearing assembly.
D. Insert the centering pin of the bearing into the propeller shaft noting the alignment marks on the propeller shaft tube and the coupling flange.
NOTE:
Do not damage the seal lip of the propeller shaft tube with the centering pin.
E. From the flexible coupling side, install the 3 new bolts and washers, and tighten the 3 new nuts from the propeller shaft side, then tighten to engage the collar.
Torque: 33 Nm (340 kgf cm, 25 ft lbs)
NOTE:
^ Bolts, nuts and washers are not reusable.
^ Insert the bolts on the flexible coupling side, and tighten the nuts on the propeller shaft tube side.
^ Do not deform the rubber bushing of the flexible coupling by twisting.
8. Install the Equipment Drive Shaft.
