Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection

1. Warm up engine.
Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.





2. Connect TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool.
(a) Remove the fuse cover on the instrument panel.
(b) Connect the TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC)3.
(c) Please refer to the TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool operator's manual for further details.
3. Connect timing light.





Connect the power source terminal of the timing light to terminal 30 of the starter and test probe to the No.1 high-tension cord (light blue).
4. Check idle speed.
(a) Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approximately 90 seconds.
(b) Check the idle speed.
Idle speed: 750 +/- 50 rpm
5. Inspect ignition timing.





(a) Using Special Service Tool (SST) Diagnosis Check Wire # 09843 - 18020 or equivalent, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC1.





(b) Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 5° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) @ idle (Transmission in neutral position).
(c) Remove the SST from the DLC1.
6. Further check ignition timing.
Check that the ignition timing advances.
Ignition timing: 7° - 17° BTDC @ idle (Transmission in neutral position).

NOTE: The timing mark moves in a range between 7° and 17°.

7. Disconnect timing light.
8. Disconnect TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool or equivalent.
