Rear Axle Removal and Installation (Rear Disc Brake Model)

CAUTION:
Do not allow brake fluid to get on painted surfaces. Painted surface will be damaged.


Removal
1) Hoist vehicle and remove rear wheels.
2) Remove exhaust center pipe and muffler.
3) Remove rear brake caliper, brake flexible hose and parking brake cable.
4) Disconnect brake pipes (1) from brake hoses (2) and remove E-rings (3).





5) Disconnect rear wheel speed sensor connectors and then remove rear wheel hubs.
6) For 4WD model, remove propeller shaft, rear drive shaft and rear differential.
7) Remove coil springs.
8) Disconnect wheel speed sensor clamps (1) and parking brake cable clamp nuts (2) from rear axle.





9) While supporting rear axle (1) at both ends remove rear axle bolts and then remove rear axle from chassis by lowering floor jack gradually.
10) Remove brake pipes from rear axle, if necessary.
11) Remove rubber edge covers (2) (if equipped) from rear axle (1), if necessary.





Installation
Reference: Rear Axle and Coil Spring Inspection
1) Install rubber edge covers (2) (if equipped) to rear axle (1) as shown in figure, if removed.





2) Install brake pipes to rear axle, if removed.
3) Place rear axle on floor jacks. Then install rear axle and new rear axle bolts (1) and tighten bolts temporarily.





4) Install coil springs.
5) For 4WD model, install rear differential, propeller shaft and rear drive shaft.
6) Install rear wheel hubs referring to Step 2) to 4) of "Installation" under Rear Wheel Hub Assembly Removal and Installation (Rear Disc Brake Model).
7) Connect brake flexible hoses (1) to bracket on rear axle with E-rings (2) and tighten brake pipe flare nuts (3) to specified torque.

Tightening torque
Brake pipe flare nut (a): 16 Nm (1.6 kg-m, 11.5 lbf-ft)





8) Install rear brake caliper, brake flexible hose and parking brake cable.
9) Install wheel speed sensor clamps (2) and tighten parking brake cable clamp nuts (1) to specified torque.

Tightening torque
Parking brake cable clamp nut (a): 26 Nm (2.6 kg-m, 19.0 lbf-ft)





10) Install exhaust center pipe and muffler.
11) Fill reservoir with brake fluid and bleed brake system.
12) Install wheel and tighten wheel nuts to specified torque.
13) Adjust parking brake cable.
14) Lower hoist and bounce vehicle up and down several times to stabilize suspension.
15) Tighten shock absorber lower nuts and rear axle bolts to specified torque.

NOTE:
When tightening these nuts and bolts, be sure that vehicle is not on hoist and in unloaded condition.

Tightening torque
Rear shock absorber lower nut: 90 Nm (9.0 kg-m, 65.0 lbf-ft)
Rear axle bolt: 73 Nm (7.3 kg-m, 53.0 lbf-ft)

16) Perform brake test (foot brake and parking brake).
17) Check each installed part for fluid leakage.
