Oil Pump: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Drain engine oil.
4. Remove water pump belt, pulley, alternator and bracket.
5. Remove timing belt as outlined under Timing Belt
6. Remove engine oil level gauge and its guide bolt.
7. Remove crankshaft timing belt pulley and timing belt guide.
8. Remove oil pan and oil pump strainer.
9. Remove oil pump attaching bolts, then oil pump.
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove oil level gauge guide from pump.
2. Remove rotor plate, then inner and outer rotors.
INSPECTION
Fig. 56 Measuring Oil Pump Gear Radial Clearance:
Fig. 57 Measuring Oil Pump Gear Side Clearance:
1. Inspect oil seal lip for damage, replace as necessary.
2. Inspect inner and outer rotors, rotor plate and oil pump case for excessive wear or damage.
3. Using thickness gauge, measure radial clearance between outer rotor and case, Fig. 56. If clearance exceeds .0122 inch, replace outer rotor or case.
4. Using straightedge and thickness gauge, measure side clearance, Fig. 57. Clearance should not exceed .0059 inch.
ASSEMBLY
1. Clean and dry all disassembled parts.
2. Apply thin coat of engine oil to inner and outer rotors, oil seal lip portion and inside surfaces of oil pump case and plate.
3. Install inner and outer rotors to case.
4. Install rotor plate. Tighten screws securely. Ensure gears turn smoothly by hand.
5. Install guide seal to pump case, then oil level gauge guide.
INSTALLATION

Fig. 60 Installing Rubber Seal:
Fig. 61 Installing Guide, Key & Pulley:
1. Install two oil pump pins and new oil pump gasket to cylinder block.
2. Install oil pump to crankshaft, using tool shown in Fig. 58.
3. Install oil pump attaching bolts as shown in Fig. 59, tighten bolts to specifications. Ensure oil seal lip is not upturned, then remove tool.
4. Install rubber seal between oil pump and water pump, Fig. 60.
5. If edge of pump gasket bulges out, cut bulge off with sharp knife. Gasket edge must be smooth and flush with end faces of pump case and cylinder block.
6. Install timing belt guide, key and crankshaft timing belt pulley, Fig. 61. Timing belt guide must be install with its concave side facing oil pump.
7. Install timing belt as outlined under Timing Belt.
