Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair
INTERLOCK CABLENOTE: Don't bend interlock cable excessively when removing and installing it, or system will not operate correctly.
REMOVAL
1. Disable air bag system.
2. Down steering column by removing 4 bolts.
3. Remove meter hood and then steering cover.
4. Remove interlock cable clamp screw located at ignition switch assembly.
5. Disconnect interlock cable inner end form key interlock lever.
6. With console box removed, take out interlock cable by loosening lock nuts.
7. Detach cable end from release cam while pressing claws of release cam boss. At this time, be careful not to cause damage to its claws.
INSTALLATION
1. Shift select lever to "N" range and turn ignition key to "ACC" position.
2. Connect inner end of interlock cable to key interlock lever. (Ignition switch side.)
3. Install outer end bracket of interlock cable to ignition switch assembly, and tighten screw to specified torque.
Tightening Torque
"a": 2.2 Nm (0.22 kg-m, 1.5 ft. lbs.)
4. Install steering column.
5. Pass and connect interlock cable as shown.
6. With key release cam set as shown, connect inner end of interlock cable to key release cam. (Select lever side.)
7. Move key release cam so that it is set at such angle as shown and with special tool (A) inserted in hole (a), fix key release cam.
Special Tool
(A): 09925-78210
8. With key release cam fixed with special tool (A), install cable outer to bracket and after making sure that cable outer is pushed in arrow direction (A by leaf spring, tighten mounting nut to specified torque.
Tightening Torque
"a": 10-16 Nm (1.0-1.6 kg-m, 7-11 ft. lbs.)
9. Pull out special tool (A) and check that key release arm moves smoothly by operating select lever button (at "P" position).
10. Enable air bag system.
INSPECTION
1. Shift select lever to "N" range and turn ignition key to "ACC" position.
2. Move lever to "P" range while pressing knob button on select lever.
3. Release knob button and turn ignition key to "LOCK" position.
4. Check that knob button is restrained in amount to be pushed in and that select lever would not move from "P" range to any other position.
5. With ignition key turned to "ON" position, depress brake pedal and check that knob button on select lever is not restrained in amount to be pushed in and that select lever pressed can be moved freely from "P" range to any other position when knob button is pressed.
6. If anything faulty has been noted in above checks, reassemble according to installation procedure described a hove.
