Each standard size piston has a No. 1 or No. 2 stamped on it representing outer diameter. There are also numbers stamped on cylinder block machined surface representing inner diameters of cylinders, Fig. 28. Stamped numbers on pistons and stamped numbers on cylinder block should correspond.
Before replacing the piston and connecting rods, decarbonize the top of the cylinder bore. When installing first and second rings, marked side of each ring should be toward top of piston, Fig. 29. The compression ring gap should be staggered and not in line with the oil ring gap, Fig. 30. Install the piston as shown in Fig. 31.
