SUBJECT: 1987 JUSTY SERVICE MANUAL CORRECTION

THIS BULLETIN IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY

CHANGE IN PROCEDURE FOR INSTALLING THE CYLINDER HEAD
The cylinder head bolt tightening procedure and tightening torque used in assembling the cylinder head have been changed as shown below. use this information to correct section 2-3, page 26, item #3, Installation of Cylinder Head in the 1987 Subaru Justy Service Manual.

Note: Cylinder head retorquing after driving is not necessary using this procedure.

INSTALLATION OF CYLINDER HEAD

(A) Apply oil to the washers and bolt threads

(B) Install the cylinder head to the crankcase with the washers and the washer based bolts.

Note: Install the washer with its convex side up. If the washer has been chamfered, direct the chamfered side up. See Figure 1.

(C) Tighten the cylinder head bolts in two operations. First tighten to 39 N-m (4 kg.m, 29 ft.lbs.) in the specified tightening sequence. Then, tighten to 73 N-m (7.5 kg.m, 54 ft.lbs.) in the specified tightening sequence. See Figure 2.

(D) Back off each head bolt 1/4 turn in reverse order of tightening sequence. See Figure 2.

(E) Finally tighten the bolts to 73 +/- 3.9 N-m (7.5 +/- 0.4 kg.m, 54 +/- 2.9 ft.lbs.) in the specified tightening sequence. See Figure 2.
Note: You must follow the procedure above in order to stabilize the axial force of each cylinder head bolt.
