Replacement

NOTE:
^ Component identifier numbers used in the following illustrations relate to specific steps in the procedures below.
^ There are two types of torque converter housing.
^ The new type can be used in both new and older transmissions.
^ The older type can only be used in combination with fluid pumps of the older design.
^ The new type of torque converter housing was introduced from transmission number 16850.

Removal
1. Remove the transmission from the car.
- Use retainer tool No. 87 92 293, or equivalent, to secure the torque converter.
2. Set up the transmission in a stand using fixture tool No. 87 91 469, or equivalent.
3. Lift out the torque converter using the grips, tool 87 91 766, or equivalent.
4. Remove the torque converter housing.

5. Dismantle the transmission until the partition plate with pump has been removed.
6. Remove the retaining screws and take apart the pump and intermediate plate.
- Hit the partition surface using a plastic hammer.

Installation
1. Install the new pump drive, noting the installing position.
2. Install the overflow valve and install the pump to the partition plate.

3. Check axial play.
- The transmission should be assembled up to cylinder B.
- The 2nd one-way clutch should not be installed.
a. Install shims (selected thickness 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) and shim holder to the hub for cylinder B.
b. Insert the complete unit, pump/partition plate, while turning it forward and backwards until the Belleville washer for cylinder C is against the gear case. Then install the unit with two opposite screws.
Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.3 ft. lbs.)
c. Attach measuring device tool No. 87 91 519, or equivalent, to the turbine shaft.
d. Check that the tip of the dial gauge is against the stator shaft and set the dial gauge to "0".
e. Measure axial play by raising the measuring device.
Correct axial play: 0.1-0.3 mm (0.004-0.012 inch)
f. If the actual value deviates from the correct value, a thicker or thinner shim should be selected.
- Lift off the complete unit, pump/partition plate.

4. Install shim holders and the required shim to the partition plate hub.
5. Insert 2nd one-way clutch in the intermediate plates for brake C so that the inner teeth are in contact with the washers.
6. Check that all intermediate plates are engaged in the outer ring of the one-way clutch by turning the outer ring so that the intermediate plates also move.
7. Slightly tighten the brake band adjusting screw so that cylinder B is fixed.
Then turn the transmission one quarter turn.
8. Install the entire unit (pump, partition plate and 2nd one-way clutch) in the gear case by turning forwards and backwards and pressing in.

NOTE: Make sure that the one-way clutch does not drop out of the plate assembly.

9. If correctly installed, the Belleville washer should rest on the gear case and should deflect when the pump body is pressed.

CAUTION:
^ There are two types of pump cover.
^ When installing a pump cover with cast lugs, the new type of torque converter must be used.
^ The new type of fluid pump was introduced from transmission number 16850.

10. Secure the partition plate using the 8 cylinder screws.
- Make sure that the pump rotates freely by turning using fluid pump centering tool No. 87 91 725, or equivalent.
Wrench size = TORX socket TX 27
Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.3 ft. lbs.)
11. Loosen the brake band and make sure that adjustment is correct.
12. Install the torque converter housing gasket and housing to the gear case.
13. Insert torque converter using grips tool.
- Secure the torque converter using retainer tool.
14. Install the transmission.
