Clutch E

NOTE: Component identifier numbers used in the following illustrations relate to specific steps in the procedures below.





Disassembly
1. Depending on design, remove the thrust washer or needle bearing from the engine shaft.

CAUTION:
^ The thrust washer and needle bearing cannot be interchanged.
^ A needle bearing may only be used if the engine shaft is intended for this.

NOTE: When changing the engine shaft, the newer type of engine shaft with needle bearing should be used.

2. Remove the circlip and take out the entire plate assembly.
3. Press down the return spring in a press using installing tool No. 87 91 527, or equivalent, and remove the split locking ring.
4. Remove the Belleville washers.
- Press out plunger E using compressed air.
- Place a compressed air gun against the fluid supply passage.

Assembly
1. Install new seals to the plunger and grease them using Vaseline.
2. Press plunger E into the cylinder on the engine shaft.
3. Install the two Belleville washers to the plunger and press them down in a press using installing tool.
- Fix them using the split washer.
4. Install the 5 friction plates.
- Start with an outer plate.
- Then install friction plates and outer plates alternately.
- Install the final plate with the flange up.

CAUTION:
^ If new plates are installed, they should first be placed in automatic transmission fluid
^ With dry plates, there is a danger that they might burn.

5. Check if it is necessary to change the seals.
- Grease both the seals with Vaseline and install them.

NOTE: The white seals on the engine shaft have angled ends.

6. Check that the steel seal is locked in position (edges engaged).
