Steering Column Service

Refer to Fig. 2, when performing this procedure.
The two sections of steering column shaft are matched and must not be pulled apart under any circumstances.
1. Remove transverse bolt together with spacer and washers, then detach universal joint from steering column shaft.
2. Remove circlip at lower end of column shaft.
3. Press column shaft together so it comes out of lower bearing, then remove complete steering column shaft with ignition switch.
4. Remove slide rails from bracket, then drill out blind rivets and remove holder for dash panel.
5. Remove electronic holder mounting brackets, then the steering column shaft bearing housing and clip for vacuum tube.
6. Drill out blind rivets that hold knee guard, then remove knee guard with safety cable.
7. Reverse procedure to assemble, noting the following:
a. Torque universal joint to 17-22 ft. lbs.
b. Torque transverse bolt to 14.8 ft. lbs.
