Parking Pawl: Service and Repair

NOTE: Component identifier numbers used in the following illustrations relate to specific steps in the procedures below.





Removal
Preparatory Work (remove the following):
- Left-hand fender liner.
- Intermediate gear cover.
- Pinion shaft drive.
1. Start by removing the valve body cover and then the valve body.
- Press the pawl spring (carefully and not too far) to one side and lift off the complete gear selector mechanism from the cylindrical pin.
2. Remove the selector lever from the selector shaft.
- Wrench size = 13 mm.
3. The pawl spring can be removed when both screws have been taken out.
- Note the guide pin.
- Wrench size = TORX TX 27.
4. Remove the dowel from the pawl cam using a suitable drift.
- Lift the cowl using a magnet.
5. Unscrew the plug on the rear of the transmission enabling the support shaft to be withdrawn towards the rear.
- Wrench size = 6 mm.





6. Withdraw the selector shaft half-way out.
- The pawl cam can now be removed and the pawl can be depressed using a suitable screwdriver.
7. Fully withdraw the selector shaft.
8. Remove the radial seal for the selector shaft using a hook or a suitable screwdriver.
9. Remove the screw with washer retaining the support shaft from the end wall side.
- Wrench size = TORX TX 27.
10. The shaft can now be removed.
11. After the shaft has been removed, the pawl and spring can be removed.





Installation
1. Hook the spring onto the pawl.
2. Install the pawl and press in the shaft from the end wall side.
3. Install the cylinder screw and washer.
- Wrench size = TORX TX 27
- Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.3 ft. lbs.).
4. Install a new radial seal for the selector shaft using a plastic hammer.
5. Install the pawl cam and press in the shaft as far as it will go.





6. Install the plug with a new seal.
- Wrench size = 6 mm.
- Tightening torque: 32 Nm (23.5 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the washer, insert the selector shaft into the pawl cam and install the cowl using a suitable drift.

NOTE: If the pawl cam and washer have been changed, the thickness of the shims must be measured again, refer to step 11.

8. Setting gauge tool No. 87 91 493, or equivalent, should be installed to the pin for accurate location of the pawl spring.
- Note the guide pin.
9. Press the pawl spring against the setting gauge and secure it in position using two screws.
- Wrench size = TORX TX 27.
- Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.3 ft lbs.)
10. Remove the setting gauge and install the complete selector mechanism to the cylindrical pin.





11. Adjust using shims (if required).
a. Using slide hammer tool No. 87 91 360, or equivalent, to remove the governor feed pipe before installing selector arm clearance adjustment support tool No. 87 91 501, or equivalent.
- Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.3 ft lbs.)
b. Press the pawl cam towards the selector mechanism and measure dimension "A" between the pawl cam and the contact surface on the gear case, using a feeler gauge.
- Clearance should be 0.10-0.20 mm (0.040-0.079 inch).
c. Calculate shim thickness as follows:
- Dimension A (mm) minus clearance (mm) = shim thickness (mm)
12. Install the selector lever and tighten the nut.
13. Install the governor feed pipe.
