Engine - Excessive Oil Consumption

88saab07

FILE IN S.I. Man VOL. I

SEC. A-2, B-2 PG. 12
ISSUE: 04/88-1047, 1048
SUBJECT: EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION

APPLICATION: 900, 9000 MODELS WITH 16V ENGINES

A very limited number of vehicles with 16 valve engines may experience excessive oil consumption. If such a complaint exists, inspect the intake tubing and air filter assembly for unusual amounts of engine oil (small amounts are normal).

Excessive oil consumption may be caused by a slight distortion of the mating surfaces (see figure) on the camshaft bearing caps. Distortion in this area may allow oil (under pressure) to be sprayed into the crankcase ventilation system and subsequently drawn into the inlet system. To correct this problem, sealing washers must be installed under both bolts on 8 of the 10 bearing caps as described below.

Sealing Washers (16 per car) 91-14-885

Other possible sources for oil consumption should not be overlooked (i.e. rings, guides, etc.). On Turbo models check the operation and direction of the one-way check valve in the crankcase ventilation system (gray side towards valve cover).

Although oil only passes through one of the bolts (black) on each of the bearing caps, washers must be installed under both bolts to maintain equal pressure on the bearing cap.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove the valve cover.

2. Remove both bolts securing one of the following bearing caps; #2, #3, #4, #5, #7, #8, #9 or #10.

3. Reinstall the bolts with 2 sealing washers (P/N 91-14-885) and torque them to 11 ft.lbs. (15 N-m).
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 (1 cap at a time) until all 8 bearing caps have sealing washers.

5. Install the valve cover and clean the intake and/or crankcase ventilation systems as necessary.
