THE CAMPAIGN


The Defect


Saab-Scania has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a defect which may be safety-related exists in all 1986 9000 Turbos imported to the U.S. market.

These cars are being recalled by Saab-Scania of America to install some rubber protection at the windshield wiper motor bracket. Depending on how the wiring harness was installed, it may chafe against the bracket and cause a short-circuit and possibly a fire.


Vehicles Affected By This Recall


1986 9000 Turbos within the following VIN Serial No. ranges:

G4000001-G4000500

G1000001-G1029000


Recall Schedule


This Service Information signifies the start of the campaign. Initial parts shipments will begin during the first week of December, 1986. Owner notices will be mailed approximately one week later.

Attached to this S.I. is a status listing of cars in your area that were sold by your dealership. This gives you some indication as to the amount of repairs you will be performing and to the amount of spare parts that you might need. Initial orders of parts will be enough to repair 30% of the cars on your status list.

Rubber Protection P/N 82-78-558

Loctite Adhesive 495 P/N 02-73-565


Initial quantities of rubber protection pieces will equal 30% of the cars shown on your status list. One bottle of Loctite 495 will also be shipped with each initial order. Order additional parts VOR only.


REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS



1. Remove left side firewall cover.

A Torx T25 driver is required for the screw and a screwdriver is needed to pry up the two spring clips.



2. Apply a few drops of Loctite Adhesive 495 P/N 02-73-565 to each strip and press protection strip 82- 78-558 (two required) onto each side of the windshield wiper motor bracket (see drawing). Press firmly into place along the length of the bracket. Manipulate the wiring harness out of contact with the bracket, if necessary.

Protection pieces should extend from flush with the floor of the plenum and upward to where the edge of the bracket starts to curve forward.
Note! Electrical wires must not be in contact with any uncovered edges of the wiper motor bracket.


3. Reinstall the firewall cover.



4. Stamp the Modification Plate as follows:

Number 8, Position B4

CLAIM PROCEDURE


Claim Forms


The pre-printed Recall 268 form which is brought in by the customer is to be submitted by the dealer to the Saab-Scania of America Warranty Department. This is necessary for the payment of labor and parts and to complete our recall records. Our periodic recall reports to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are updated from the recall claim forms. NHTSA records are subject to Federal audit.

If the owner has lost the claim or it is otherwise unavailable or unusable, contact your Saab Regional Service Manager's office and request a new Recall 268 claim form.

When the supply of forms pre-printed for Recall 268 are exhausted a blank recall claim form will be sent. Fill this form out according to the sample pictured here. Recall repairs cannot be claimed on a regular warranty claim form.


Submitting Claims


The recall claim form is a three part copy. Send the Factory copy (#1) to SaabScania of America. For this recall, the Parts Copy (#2) can be discarded because there are no replaced parts. Keep the Dealer Copy (#3) for your records.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE - PLEASE READ

WIPER MOTOR BRACKET PROTECTION - All 1986 9000 Models Saab Recall No. 268, NHTSA No. 86V-143


Dear Saab Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Saab-Scania AS, the manufacturer of Saab cars, has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in all 1986 9000 Turbo models. Our records indicate you are the current owner of such a vehicle.

Saab-Scania has found that the wiring harness, depending on how it was installed, may chafe against the windshield wiper motor bracket. If a short circuit develops, there is risk of a fire.

To prevent the possibility of chafing, your Saab dealer will remove the left side firewall cover and apply two rubber protection strips to the outer edges of the wiper motor bracket and check for any wire contact with the metal bracket. The repair takes less than one-half hour.

Bring this letter and the enclosed preprinted recall claim form to your dealer on the day of your appointment. When the work is completed, be sure to sign the recall claim form in the space provided. This form must be submitted by your dealer to Saab-Scania of America, Inc. for our recall records and to update periodic recall reports to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

If you should experience difficulty in making arrangements for this work to be performed at no charge by your dealer, we urge you to call the Saab Regional Office nearest you (see letterhead). Our Consumer Relations Staff is available to assist you in resolving any such problem. You may submit a complaint to the Administrator, NHTSA. 400 Seventh Street, S.W. Washington, D.C. 20590 or call the toll-free Auto-Safety Hotline at 800-424-9393 Washington, D.C. area residents may call 426-0123) if you believe that Saab-Scania of America. Inc. or an authorized Saab dealer has failed or is unable to remedy this defect without charge or has failed or is unable to do so within a reasonable time, which is not longer than 60 days after you first bring your vehicle to your dealer for repair.
