Trailing Arm: Service and Repair
Removing and installing rear trailing arm
Preliminary work
1. Raise the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel.
Removing and installing rear trailing arm
Removing trailing arm
1. Remove connecting link (suspension/stabilizer) -3- on the anti-roll bar.
Remove transverse control arm -2- on the rear-axle carrier side section and on the wheel bearing housing -2a-.
Detach diagonal arm at the transverse control arm -2-.
Rear toe and transverse control arm
1.1. Remove connecting link (suspension/stabilizer) -3- at the anti-roll bar. Counter while loosening the nuts.
1.2. Remove transverse control arm -2- on rear-axle carrier side section. To do this, remove toe eccentric threaded joint on the rear-axle carrier side section. Mark the basic position of the camber eccentrics on the rear-axle carrier side section.
1.3. Detach diagonal arm on the transverse control arm -2-.
1.4. Remove transverse control arm -2- at the wheel bearing housing -2a-.
Use the press-out tool 9560 for pressing out the ball joint. When loosening the lock nuts on the wheel bearing housing, counter at the ball-joint pins with a screwdriver 9546 (Torx screwdriver).
2. On vehicles with range adjustment, detach the strut from the sensor on the trailing arm (left side only).
3. Pull the ball pin of the trailing arm down out of the wheel carrier (pull trailing arm down while making sure not to tilt it).
Installing trailing arm
1. Install trailing arm (fit to rear-axle carrier side section, diagonal arm and wheel bearing housing). Replace all lock nuts.
Observe correct tightening torques.
Rear toe and transverse control arm
1.1. Fit transverse control arm -2- on the rear-axle carrier side section and wheel bearing housing -2a-.
Set the basic position of the toe eccentrics at the marked position on the rear-axle carrier side section.
1.2. Fit diagonal arm on the transverse control arm -2-.
1.3. Mount connecting link (suspension/stabilizer) -3- on the anti-roll bar. Counter while tightening the nuts.
2. On vehicles with range adjustment, fit the strut from the sensor on the trailing arm (left side only).
Subsequent work
1. Fit wheel.
2. Align the vehicle.
