Concerns:
- Check Engine light comes on,
- Tank leakage diagnostic module (referred to below as DMTL unit).

Information: Fault code P1486 in DME control unit fault memory.

Depending on the condition of the vehicle as well as environmental conditions, the Check Engine light can come on and fault code P1486 may be entered in the DME control unit fault memory on model year 2007 vehicles manufactured before 17 April 2007.
Replacement of the DMTL unit is prescribed during diagnosis as the remedial action for fault code P1486.

Work Procedure:
The following applies in this case:
1. Using the PIWIS Tester 9718, check under => 'Control units' => 'DME' => 'Identification' to find the number of the data record in the DME control unit.

Compare this data record number with the data record numbers listed in Step 1.1.
If the last two digits of the data record number are lower than one of the numbers listed: => Step 2
If the last two digits of the data record number are the same or higher than one of the numbers listed: => Step 3

2. The DME data record number you find is lower than the numbers specified in Step 1.1:

2.1 Erase the fault memory, do not replace the DMTL unit.
2.2 Program the DME control unit using the PIWIS Tester 9718 by selecting => 'DME' => 'Control unit programming' => 'Program control unit'. (The data record that applies as of 17 April 2007 is loaded).

NOTE: PIWIS Tester software version V20.000 or higher is required for programming.

2.3 Check whether the DMTL unit is defective.
To do this, select the function => Tank leak test' under => 'DME' => 'Short test' and run this test twice in quick succession. Then read out the fault memory.
If fault code P1486 is not stored: End of remedial action.
If fault code P1486 is displayed: => Step 3

3. Replace the DMTL unit.
To do this, remove and install the carbon canister and replace the DMTL unit at the same time.

End of remedial action.
