Removing and installing front brake pads





Preliminary work

Remove wheel.

Removing front brake pads - 4-piston fixed-caliper

For C2S/C4S vehicles as of model year 2005

The core of the warning contact wire must not be left exposed. Worn insulation is not important.

If necessary, remove a little brake fluid from the reservoir by suction in order to prevent an overflow when the disc brake pads are pushed back.

1. Remove the safety bracket and extract the retaining pin inwards.

2. Pull out the warning contact wire on the brake caliper and remove the warning contacts from the brake pad plates.
3. Remove brake pads using the brake pad puller. Always observe the following important points:

Press the brake pads back as far as possible using the piston resetting fixture.

Pull out brake pads together with the vibration dampers. If this is not possible (depending on the amount of wear on the brake pads), use a spatula to detach the vibration dampers from the brake pad backing plate before removing the pads.

Warning
Risk of accidents if brake pads with the wrong brake pad quality are installed.
This can result in longer braking distances and more wear.


- Use only the type-specific brake pads.

Warning
Increased risk of accidents if old parts are fitted on brake caliper.
This can cause malfunctions.


- Fit new expanding spring, new retainer pin and new retainer on the brake caliper.

Information
The brake pad backing plates (rear side) must not be greased.

Replace vibration dampers each time the pads are changed.

The vibration dampers have an adhesive protective film. The protective film must be removed before installation.

Replace warning contacts if the core of the wire is worn.

The warning contact can still be used if there are only scrape marks on the plastic part of the warning contact.

Remove some brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir by suction if necessary.

1. Before fitting the brake pads, check the brake discs for wear.
2. If necessary, push the brake pistons back into their original position using the brake piston resetting fixture NR.144.
3. Insert new vibration dampers into the pistons. Always remove the protective film on the vibration dampers before installation.

4. Insert the brake pads.
5. Fit new expanding spring, new retaining pin and new retainer. These parts are available as a repair kit and must be replaced each time the pads are changed.
6. Insert the warning contact wire and warning contacts.
7. Actuate the brake pedal several times to position the brake pads on the brake discs.
8. Check the brake fluid level and correct it if necessary. The brake fluid level must be between the MAX and MIN markings.

New brake pads require a bedding-in period of approx. 200 km. Only then do they achieve their maximum braking effect. The slightly reduced braking effect must be compensated for by increased pressure on the brake pedal. The same also applies after a brake disc change.

2. Push the brake pistons back to their original position using the brake piston resetting fixture NR.144 if necessary.
3. Fit new vibration dampers in the pistons. Remove protective film from the vibration dampers before installation.

- Only use the type-specific brake pads.

- Replace the brake pads when the brake pad wear indicator light comes on, but no later than when there is a residual pad thickness of 2 mm on each axle.

- Replace the brake discs on each axle upon reaching the wear limits.

4. Insert brake pads.

- Fit new expanding spring, new retaining pin and securing clip on the brake caliper.

5. Fit new expanding spring, new retaining pin and new retainer. These parts are available as a repair kit and must be replaced each time the pads are changed.
6. Insert the warning contact wire and the warning contacts.
7. Press the brake pedal several times to position the brake pads on the brake discs.
8. Check the brake fluid level and correct it if necessary. The brake fluid level must be between the MIN and MAX markings.
