Removing And Installing The Side Airbag Unit
Removing side airbag unit
WARNING: Danger of injury and damage to property as a result of incorrect handling of airbag units. Always observe the safety regulations for handling airbag units. Refer to Safety regulations for handling airbag and belt tensioner units.
- The airbag unit must always be deposited so that the airbag opening faces upwards.
- If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be kept in a locked place.
- Remove ignition key. Disconnect the battery and cover battery terminal. Refer to Battery.
- After the battery is disconnected, always wait for 1 minute before disconnecting the airbag plugs.
1. Remove ignition key.
2. Disconnect the battery and cover terminal or battery.
3. Remove the door panel.
INFORMATION: Behind the Airbag inscription, there is an M5x10 fastening screw that is fastened to the fastening clip of the side airbag unit.
4. Remove the cover with the Airbag inscription and undo the M5x10 fastening screw.
5. Disconnect the electrical plug connection.
6. Undo four M6x16 fastening screws.
INFORMATION: Since 03.11.1999, the fastening screws are micro-encapsulated. The four M6x16 fastening screws must be replaced each time they are loosened.
7. Carefully remove side airbag unit from the door and put it down properly.
INFORMATION: The airbag unit must be placed in a package or packed in film and, if removed for an extended period, stored under dry conditions in a locked room.
Installing side airbag unit
Side identification with side airbag units
- Units identified with an R belong in the right door, units identified with an L belong in the left door.
- The locking pin -A- must point to the rear.
- The wire connection point -B- must always face the front.
- Fastening clip M5 -C- must always face the rear.
Installation
1. Check sensor for the side airbag unit for damage and, if necessary (e.g. after the third time the side airbag is triggered), replace it. Refer to Removing and installing sensor for side airbag.
2. Check the covering film behind the side airbag unit for damage. It protects against water leaking in.
3. Insert the side airbag unit identified with an R into the right door and the unit identified with an L into the left door.
4. Tighten four new, micro-encapsulated M6x16 fastening screws.
5. Make electrical plug connection.
6. Tighten M5x10 fastening screw and push on the cover with the inscription Airbag.
7. Install the door panel.
8. Connect the battery.
