Replacing Crankshaft Sealing Ring (with Tools 9609 and 9609/1)

Vehicle Type:
Boxster (986)

Model Year:
As of 1997 (V)

Concern:

Installing crankshaft sealing ring (flywheel side).

Information:

To avoid recurring leakage of the crankshaft sealing ring, a replacement crankshaft seal must be installed in a different position.

Special tool 9609 has been supplemented by a new mounting bell, 9609/1. This new mounting bell (9609/1) is part of the 911 Carrera (996) initial tool shipment.

Repairs:

When replacing or installing a crankshaft sealing ring, use the following guidelines:

Tool 9609:

Use when installing the crankshaft sealing ring with a new crankshaft only.

Tool 9609 with the new 9609/1 mounting bell:

Use whenever installing a replacement crankshaft sealing ring (with a used crankshaft). This tool combination will reposition the replacement seal to a new depth in order to achieve the necessary micro-sealing effect. Be certain to run tool in completely to it's stopping point in order to attain the proper seal depth.

Note:
Do not lubricate the outer diameter of the crankshaft sealing ring. The outer surface must be dry upon installation.
