Work Procedure
1. Connecting leads to plug X11.1.1 Ensure the driver's door window is closed. Disconnect and cover the battery.
1.2 Locate the relay and fuse carrier in the left front footwell. Locate two wires, GN and YE; (0.35 mm) tied up in the area of the relay and fuse carrier.
Note:
These wires come from the interior mirror.
1.3 Loosen screw on electrical plug X11 in the area of the hinge-pillar (Technical Manual, Group 5, Service No. 57 51 19). Pull plug connection out of the hinge pillar and disconnect (Figure 1, work step A).
1.4 Remove the white 10-pin plug from the X11 plug housing (Figure 1, work step B). Do this by removing the locking bracket (Figure 1, arrow 1) and pulling the plug out of the housing while depressing the locking tab (arrow 2).
1.5 Insert the leads (from the automatic dimming interior rearview mirror) into the white 10-pin plug as follows:
Color Cross-Section Function Installation Notes
GN 0.35 12 V - Positive Insert in pin 9 of the 10-pin plug.
YE 0.35 Ground - Negative Insert in pin 10 of the 10-pin plug.
1.6 Fit the white 10-pin plug back into the X11 plug housing and reinstall the locking bracket.
2. Exchanging the door mirror glass and mirror base.
2.1 Disassemble door mirror, see Technical Manual, Group 6, Service No.66 89 37 (Figure 2).
2.2 Remove the mirror base from the driver's door.
2.3 Fit parts to the new mirror base.
Notes:
The 15-pin plug (Figure 2, Item A) is already pre-assembled on the new mirror base. Remember to swap over the spring clamp on the mirror base. This tensions the mirror glass.
2.4 Fit mirror base to the driver's door and assemble door mirror (Technical Manual, Group 6, Service No. 66 89 37).
3. Replacing the driver's door wiring harness.
3.1 Remove door panel, airbag unit and molded foam door liner. (Technical Manual, Group 7, Service No. 57 51 37).
Note:
Observe instructions and safety regulations regarding the handling of airbags. See Technical Manual.
3.2 Remove door brake (check rod) and the seal for door wiring harness (Technical Manual, Group 5, Service No. 57 51 37).
3.3 Remove mount at the door lock. Disconnect all plug connections to accessories from the door wiring harness and remove door wiring harness.
3.4 Insert new door wiring harness into the seal (for door cavity). Insert and route plug for accessories into the door.
3.5 Electrically connect the door lock and install mount. Connect all remaining plug connections in the door cavity.
Note:
If additional plugs exist which are not required, (non-installed equipment) tape the excess wiring harness plugs in the door, and tie up to avoid being chafed or damaged.
3.6 Connect plug connection X11.
Note:
When connecting the plug, hold the plug / grommet at the frame only. Otherwise the plug may be pushed out of the grommet.
4. Performing function test.
4.1 Connect the battery and switch on the ignition.
4.2 Carefully lower and raise the driver's door window, ensuring the door wiring harness clears the power window assembly. Secure door wiring harness to the door with tie-wraps if necessary.
4.3 Standardize the power window assembly. See Technical Manual, Group 5, Service No. 57 51 37.
4.4 Connect the door mirror. Ensure the door mirror functions properly. Check all mirror adjustments, mirror heating, seat and mirror memory.
4.5 Cover photocell on the glass side of the interior mirror. Both the interior and door mirrors must darken within approx. 4 s. Uncover the photocell. Both mirrors must brighten within approx. 6 s.
4.6 Repeat step 4,5, this time engaging reverse gear. Before uncovering the photocell, ensure both mirrors return to a normal state whenever reverse gear is selected.
4.7 Disconnect and cover the battery.
5. Concluding work.
5.1 Connect plug X11 and door brake (check rod) at the hinge pillar.
5.2 Install molded foam door liner and airbag unit (Technical Manual, Group 7, Service No. 57 51 37). Note: Observe instructions and safety regulations in the Technical Manual regarding the handling of airbags. Use adhesive tape to reinforce and secure the wiring harness to the loudspeaker unit (at the door liner).
5.3 Install bowden cable for Inner door lock release (Technical Manual, Group 5,Technical Information No. 2/98).
5.4 Install door mirror and trim for the relay and fuse carrier.
5.5 Connect battery and set the clock.
5.6 Read out the fault memory of the control units (e.g. alarm system, POSIP, DME, seat memory, etc.) with the P512. Erase any faults.
5.7 Input radio code if necessary.
