Radiator Fan - Runs on High Speed With Cold Engine

Group
1

Number
9307

Model
968

Part Identifier
1908

October 21, 1993

Subject:
Radiator fans run on high speed with a cold engine.

ATTENTION: Service Manager / Service Technician

Models Affected:
968 M.Y. 1992 with Tiptronic Transmission

General information:
During starting procedure, electrical impulses are induced into the radiator cooling fan relay from pin # 49 of the tiptronic control unit. These impulses may cause the contacts for high speed of the radiator cooling fan relay to stick in the on position.

Vehicle Information:
As of May 17, 1993 production, the wire from the tiptronic control unit to the radiator cooling fan relay has been deleted. This change has no negative impact on the function of the radiator cooling fans.

If a complaint is received that the radiator cooling fans run on high fan speed with a cool engine (with the ignition switch on or the key in the X position), the reason may be the cooling fan relay.

Repair Information:
To repair this condition, the radiator fan relay should be replaced and the wire (wire # 49) from the tiptronic control unit to the fan relay must be disconnected and insulated.

The wire should be disconnected at connector T47, which is located near the diagnostic socket in the passenger footwell area (see Figure A).

Diagnostic Information:
The disconnected wire # 49, will not register a fault when checking the tiptronic transmission with system tester 9288.

When operating the oil cooler fan through the drive link procedure, the radiator cooling fan will still operate and will not set a fault in the system tester 9288.

Component and connector locations can be found in 968 Workshop Manual Volume V, sheets 3 and 12.
