General Information
This is to notify you of a voluntary Pre-Delivery/Recall Campaign involving 1,936 Porsche 944, 944S, 944T and 944 Turbo S, all 1988 models, within the following VIN ranges:944 - WP0AB094_JN472285 to WP0ABO94_JN473701
944S - WP0AA294_JN465431 to WP0AA294_JN465553
944T/944 Turbo S - WP0AA295_JN151080 to WP0AA295_JN151506
It was determined that the Alloy A-arms sourced from a secondary supplier with vendor identification "SM" may have a casting defect. A-arms from that supplier were installed in approximately 83% of the vehicles. Such defective A-arms can crack and finally break after mileage accumulation. This can also occur under extreme vehicle usage. The breakage of the A-arm while driving may result in loss of control.
Customer Notification
Porsche Cars North America will notify all known owners of vehicles within the Recall VIN ranges directly by first class mail during the week of September 4, 1989, or as soon as sufficient quantity of parts are at the dealerships. See the copy of the customer notification letter included in this bulletin. A listing of all vehicles with owner's name and address in your area, within the Recall VIN ranges, will be sent to you shortly.
For those vehicles which are in dealers inventory or for which the sales information is not in our files, the notification will be addressed to the dealer. If the vehicle is in dealer inventory, new or used and/or in demo use, the Campaign should be performed without delay. If the vehicle has been retailed or dealer traded, the dealer is to make the necessary arrangements to have the customer or receiving dealer contacted and the Campaign performed.
Parts Requirement
Parts required to perform this Pre-Delivery/Recall Campaign will be shipped to you shortly. The initial quantity of parts shipped to your dealership will be based on approximately 70% of the vehicles in your area. Additional parts, after the allocation, should be ordered as needed through normal parts channels.
The parts needed to perform the required repair for each vehicle, where both A-arms require replacement are, for:
Time Allowance
a) 20 TU for inspecting A-arms, no repair required, as per repair instruction.
b) 200 TU for inspecting A-arms and replacing one (1) A-arm as per repair instruction.
c) 250 TU for inspecting A-arms and replacing both A-arms as per repair instruction.
