The purpose of this information is to aid the repairing technician in determining where water may enter the interior area of 924S, 944, 944S, and 944 Turbo vehicles.
First determine conditions under which the leak occurs.
Does the leak occur while driving? When the car is parked? Where is the car parked? Level surface or incline? How long was the car parked or driven before detecting the leak? Leak in light or heavy rain or car wash only?
Water Test
When spraying the vehicle with water, duplicate condition under which leak occurs as closely as possible. Avoid powerful jet spraying as this does not accurately simulate natural conditions.
Locating the Leak
When determining the location of leaks, it should be remembered that the body water entry point is not always the same as where the water enters the car's interior. To identify the area of water penetration, it might be helpful to produce a partial vacuum or pressure inside the car when testing for leaks.
Listed below are some possible causes for water entering.
^ Restricted or plugged water tray drains
^ Body sealer too thin on seams, intersecting panels or spot welds
^ Body sealer torn or broken
^ Body damage resulting from an accident
^ Body tolerances
^ Spot weld points open
Areas where water is likely to enter if any of the above deficiencies exist.
924S
Area A - Triangle intersection of the windshield frame, water drain tray and wheel house.
Area B - Spot weld points on the door hinge pillar to wheel house in the area of the engine hood release.
Area C - The seams where the front engine wall meets the water drain tray.
Area D - Spot weld points for the steering shaft mounting console.
944, 944S, 944 Turbo
Area A - Triangle intersection of the windshield frame, water drain tray, and wheel house.
Area B - Spot weld point of door hinge pillar to wheel house.
Area C - Water drains (restricted or plugged).
Note: The front drain hoses for the lifting roof located behind the A pillar trim panels can be punctured by the trim panel mounting screws resulting in water leaking to the inside of the vehicle.
Area D - The corner area of the water drain tray and the front engine wall.
Area E - Central electric board mounting plate.
Area F - Spot weld points for the foot pedal support.
944, 944S, 944 Turbo
Area G - Front engine wall to water drain tray seam.
Area H - Spot weld points for battery mounting bracket.
Note: Water entering this area may enter control units mounted on passenger side foot board.
Once the water entry point has been determined, apply a locally available sealer or use the following sealer available through Porsche parts channels.
