Rear Suspension

Removing

1. Undo lock nut on driveshaft.
2. Disconnect brake line at rear-axle link and remove brake caliper. Press down brake pedal with pedal arrester beforehand to prevent brake fluid flowing from the reservoir.
3. Disconnect stabilizer from rear-axle link.
4. Remove brake disc.






5. Lift rear-axle strut using special tool P 289. Undo shock absorber at rear-axle link.





6. Remove special tool P 289. Remove the driveshaft from the flange on the gearbox and pull out towards the inner side of the vehicle.
7. Remove splint and castle nut from handbrake cable. Pull out handbrake cable towards the inner side of the vehicle.
8. Undo rear-axle link at rear-axle cross tube and at the spring strut, remove.





9. Drive out rear wheel hub with special tool P 297 a.





10. Heat rear-axle link to 120 - 150 °C (250 - 300 °F) Press out angular-contact ball bearing with suitable pressing tool.

Note: Remove bearing race from wheel hub with puller if necessary.

Installing





1. Heat rear-axle link up to 120 - 150 °C (250 - 300 °F). Press in angular-contact ball bearing with suitable pressing tool as far as the stop, pressing on the outer bearing race.

Note: The angular-contact ball bearing must always be replaced as it is damaged when removed from the rear-axle link.

2. Mount handbrake with brake carrying plate and protection plate onto the rear-axle link.





3. Press wheel hub into wheel bearing.
4. Insert rear-axle link. Slide in driveshaft and assemble.
5. Adjust handbrake and bleed brake system.
6. Carry out vehide measurements.
