Engine Mount: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Suspend engine from front transport bracket using tool VW10-222 or equivalent and hold firmly in installed position. It may be necessary to disconnect air flow sensor electrical connector and/or vent hose at air cleaner to gain access to transport bracket.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove splash guard.
5. Disconnect stabilizer mounts at control arms and the stabilizer suspension at side members and remove stabilizer.
6. Remove right engine mount shield attaching nut from front axle crossmember.
7. Remove hydraulic engine mount attaching nut from front axle crossmember.
8. On vehicles equipped with power steering, disconnect power steering return line at side member.
9. On all models, disconnect universal joint at steering gear, hydraulic engine mount at engine brackets and front axle crossmember at side members. Mark relationship of universal joint to steering gear for proper assembly. Do not loosen control arm mounting bolts.
10. Pull down front axle crossmember far enough to allow removal of engine mount and disconnect driveshaft universal joint at steering gear.
11. Disengage top of engine mount from front axle crossmember.
12. Remove mount toward front of vehicle, turning mount 180° as necessary to facilitate removal.
INSTALLATION
1. Insert mount so that twist is positioned on stop at rear on right hand side and press top of mount into front axle crossmember.
2. Push correctly positioned driveshaft universal joint onto steering gear pinion.
3. Install front axle crossmember, raise crossmember with suitable lifting device to facilitate insertion of bolts, center crossmember and torque mounting bolts to 62 ft.lbs.
4. Install but do not tighten mount attaching nuts and bolts.
5. Remove tool VW10-222, then connect air flow sensor electrical connector and the air cleaner vent hose.
6. Using new self locking nuts, torque to 22 ft.lbs. in order; hydraulic engine mount to front axle crossmember, hydraulic engine mount to engine brackets, universal joint to steering gear.
7. On vehicles equipped with power steering, secure return line and, if applicable, the brake pad wear indicator wire on side member.
8. Install right engine mount shield, stabilizer and splash guard, torquing stabilizer to body and control arms attaching bolts to 17 ft.lbs.
