Clutch: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect ground strap from clutch housing.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors, then remove reference mark sensor and speed sensors.
4. Remove starter harness bracket from clutch assembly.
5. Disconnect exhaust assembly enough to allow clutch removal.
6. Remove heat shield from catalytic converter.
7. Remove splash guard, if equipped.
8. Loosen central tube (torque tube) to rear exhaust pipe bracket attaching bolts.
9. Remove or push back dust cover.
10. Remove shift lever knob retainer.
11. Remove snap ring from shift lever.
12. Pull off selector rod and washer on shift lever bolt.
13. Mark position, then remove shift lever.
14. Press down on insulation and push selector rod forward in cavity.
15. Loosen two uppermost attaching bolts from clutch housing.
16. Remove end cap from central tube (torque tube). Push back protective tube for selector rod far enough, that it is outside of the central tube housing.
17. Remove clamping sleeve attaching bolts.
18. Disconnect joint shafts from transaxle. Do not allow joint shafts to hang.
19. Disconnect back-up light electrical connector.
20. Using a suitable jack lift transmission slightly.
21. Remove transaxle suspension bolts.
22. Lower transaxle with central tube until central tube rests on rear axle cross tube.
23. Remove transaxle to central tube flange attaching bolts. Remove transaxle downward.
24. Remove starter.
25. Pull back on selector rod.
26. Move back central tube far enough until central tube housing rests on transaxle carrier. If central tube cannot be moved out of clutch housing without applying force, secure engine from moving using a suitable hoist and tool VW 10-222 or equivalent.
27. Remove clutch housing guard and right support, if equipped.
28. Remove engine mount nuts and push engine slightly to the right. Remove lower clutch housing attaching bolts.
29. Move out guard and clutch housing with release lever.
30. Remove clutch assembly.
31. Reverse procedure to install.
