Power Steering Pump Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Move the intake air duct away from the pump. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Computers and Controls.
2. Remove the engine accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory in Computers and Controls.
3. Place a drain pan below the vehicle and remove the power steering fluid reservoir. Refer to Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement.

Notice: Refer to Power Steering Hose Disconnected Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Remove the power steering gear inlet pipe and the flare nut (2) from the pump.
5. Remove and discard the O-ring (3) from the high pressure port on the pump.
6. Loosen the hose clamp (4) on the reservoir outlet hose.
7. Remove the reservoir outlet hose (1) from the pump.
8. Remove the 2 bolts that retain the pump to the cylinder head.
9. Remove the pump from the cylinder head.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the power steering pump (1) to the cylinder head.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the 2 bolts (2. 3) in order to retain the pump to the cylinder head
^ Tighten the 2 bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.)





3. Apply GM Goodwrench Automatic Transmission Fluid DEXRON(R) III, GM P/N 12378470 or the equivalent ATF, in order to lubricate a NEW O-ring (3) for the high pressure port.

Notice: Refer to Installing Hoses without Twists or Bends Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the power steering gear inlet pipe and the NEW O-ring to the high pressure port on the pump.
^ Tighten the flare nut to 80 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)
5. Install the reservoir outlet hose (1) to the pump. Install the hose clamp (4).
6. Install the power steering fluid reservoir. Refer to Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement.
7. Install the engine accessory drive belt Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory Computers and Controls.
8. Install the intake components. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement Computers and Controls.
9. Remove the drain pan.

Notice: Refer to Using Proper Power Steering Fluid Notice in Service Precautions.

10. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid.

11. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System.
