Alternator Assembly Replacement

Generator Shield (All).:

Generator Cooling Duct.:

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Air cleaner and duct assembly.
2. Battery negative cable assembly at battery.
3. Coolant recovery tank.
4. Serpentine drive belt.
5. Power steering gear pipes from clip mounted to generator upper stud.
6. Generator upper stud and nut.
7. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
8. Right tire and wheel assembly.
9. Right engine splash shield upper retaining clips and pull down shield.
10. Front exhaust pipe and converter assembly.
11. Front exhaust pipe heat shield.
12. Generator cooling duct bracket tab at oil pan, if equipped.
13. Generator cooling duct, if equipped. Refer to "Generator Cooling Duct".
14. Generator rear brace.
15. Generator rear brace nut at engine.
16. Intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt at steering gear.
17. Install jacking fixture to support engine.
18. Rear cradle bolts and lower cradle.
19. Steering gear heat shield assembly.
20. Electrical connector from generator regulator terminal.
21. Battery positive lead and nut from generator output ("BAT") terminal.
22. Electrical connector from vehicle speed sensor.
23. Power steering gear pipe clip from steering gear.
24. Power steering gear inlet hose assembly from steering gear.
25. Generator assembly.



INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Position generator assembly.
2. Power steering gear inlet hose assembly to steering gear.
3. Power steering gear pipe clip to steering gear.
4. Electrical connector to vehicle speed sensor.
5. Generator electrical connectors to generator.
6. Battery positive lead and nut to generator output ("BAT") terminal. Tighten Nut to 20 Nm (15 ft lb).
7a. Generator washer and lower bolt/screw.

^ If replacement generator does NOT fit, remove adhesive-backed shim from generator bracket (see Figure).

7b. Tighten Lower bolt/screw to 50 Nm (37 lb. ft.).
8. Steering gear heat shield assembly.
9. Raise cradle and install rear cradle bolts.
10. Remove jacking fixture.
11. Intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to steering gear.
12. Generator rear brace, bolt and nut.

^ Parts should fit easily. Tightening bolts and nuts MUST NOT put generator assembly in a bind.

Tighten
^ Generator rear brace nut to 50 Nm (37 ft lb).
^ Generator rear brace bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft lb).

13. Position generator cooling duct, if equipped. Refer to "Generator Cooling Duct".
14. Generator cooling duct bracket tab to oil pan, if equipped.
15. Front exhaust pipe heat shield.
16. Front exhaust pipe and converter assembly.
17. Right engine splash shield using upper retaining clips.
18. Right tire and wheel assembly.
19. Lower vehicle.
20. Generator upper stud and nut. Tighten Nut to 25 Nm (18 ft lb).
21. Power steering gear pipes to clip mounted on generator upper stud.
22. Serpentine drive belt.
23. Coolant recovery tank.
24. Battery negative cable assembly at battery. Tighten Cable bolt to 15 Nm (11 ft lb).
25. Air cleaner and duct assembly.
26. Bleed power steering system.
