Subject:
SERVICE OF 1987-92 2.3L GM GOODWRENCH ENGINES W/1992 OR 93 MODEL GOODWRENCH ENGINES (RPO LGO/LD2)

Models Affected:
1987-92 GRAND AM AND GRAND PRIX MODELS

ENGINE APPLICATION:
2.3L (RPOs LGO and LD2) Year 2.3L (Automatic and Manual)

ENGINE VIN:
A and D

SERVICE INFORMATION:

1992 model year 2.3L (VIN A and D) GM Goodwrench engines will replace the 1987-1992 model year 2.3L (VIN A and D) Service Replacement Engine Assemblies as service inventory is exhausted. When the 1992 model service inventory is exhausted, 1993 model assemblies will be used.

2.3L Quad 4 partial engines are no longer available. Use the GM Goodwrench engine to service engines previously serviced with a partial engine.

When replacing a 1987-89 model 2.3L (VIN D) engine with a 1992 or 1993 GM Goodwrench engine, an ECM Calibration Kit is also required. This kit contains a new EPROM (mem-cal), a crankcase vent hose connector, instruction sheet, ECM EPROM (mem-cal) access door label and two (2) 10 mm exhaust retaining nuts required to adapt the 1992 or 1993 model engine into the 1987-1989 model applications.

IMPORTANT:
For 1987-1989 model 2.3L engines, it may be necessary to drill out the two (2) lower holes in the original exhaust manifold with an 11 mm (7/16 in.) drill bit to allow the retaining studs to fit through.

IMPORTANT:
For early model 1992 2.3L engines, original engine mount bracket bolts and holes have M-10 bolt size. Later model 1992, all 1993, and GM.

Goodwrench engines will have M-12 bolts. When servicing an early 1992 model 2.3L engine having M-10 bolts, drill out engine mount bracket with a 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) drill bit. Two of the bolts are supplied on the GM Goodwrench engine; THE THIRD BOLT (GM P/N 22579611) MUST BE SPECIFICALLY ORDERED or order the engine installation kit (GM P/N 12353644) which includes the bolt (refer to applicable parts catalog). The M-12 bolt fastener specification is 60 N-m (44 lb.ft.) plus rotate 90 degrees for automatic transmission or 110 N-m (81 lbs.ft.) plus rotate 90 degrees for manual transmission.

For any future EPROM (mem-cal) replacement, be sure the replacement EPROM (mem-cal) is the correct application for the Goodwrench Engine Assembly.

PARTS INFORMATION:

An ECM Calibration Kit is required for 1992 (p/n 24570252) or 1993 (p/n 24573866) model GM Goodwrench engines when used in 87-1989 model applications. ECM Calibration Kits are not required for 1989 model 2.3L (VIN A) or any 1990-93 model applications.

Parts are currently available through GMSPO.
