Affected: 1988-90 GRAND AM MODELS W/2.3L (VINS A, D)
A revised generator removal/replace procedure has been established for the 2.3L Quad 4 engine. The labor operation number and time labor allowances were not affected.
PROCEDURE:
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Serpentine drive belt.
CAUTION: TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN ROTATING THE SERPENTINE BELT TENSIONER ON 2.3L ENGINES, USE A TIGHT FITTING 13 MM WRENCH THAT IS AT LEAST 61 CM (24") LONG. TOOL J 37059 OR EQUIVALENT CAN BE USED IN THIS OPERATION.
3. Vacuum and oil/air separator hoses.
4. Retaining clips for vacuum and electrical harness above the generator - set aside.
5. Rear generator bolts.
- (1) 13 mm hex head size and (1) 10mm hex head size
NOTICE: Use care not to damage the radiator tubes/fins.
6. Upper generator bolt.
- 15 mm hex head size.
7. Partially remove generator from bracket.
Disconnect generator electrical connector and battery lead.
8. Generator.
NOTICE: Extreme care must be taken during removal and installation not to damage the A/C compressor and condenser hose (if equipped.)
INSTALLATION:
1. Generator.
- Install electrical connector and battery lead before placing the generator into the bracket.
2. Upper bolt.
- Hand tighten.
3. Rear bolts.
- Tighten to specifications. See Illustration.
4. Upper bolt to specification. See Illustration.
5. Serpentine drive belt.
