Steering Gear Replace
Fig. 9 Adjusting steering wheel position:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Remove both pinch bolts from coupling assembly, then slide coupling up on steering spindle. Position steering wheel straight ahead as shown in Fig. 9.
3. Cut lock plate in half, then remove both tie rod bolts from center of steering gear housing.
4. On models equipped with power steering gear, disconnect fluid lines from gear.
5. On all models, remove two damper brackets and mounting clamps, as equipped.
6. Remove dash seal from gear, then remove steering gear through right hand wheel opening.
7. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. After second reuse of mounting clamp studs, thread locking kit No. 1052624 or equivalent must be used.
b. Torque mounting clamp attaching nuts to 28 ft.lbs
c. Torque coupling-to-steering column attaching bolts to 34 ft.lbs.
