Oil Pump: Service and Repair


1. Remove crankshaft gear and timing belt rear cover as previously described.
2. Disconnect electrical connector from oil pressure switch.
3. Remove oil pan as previously described.
4. Remove oil filter, then the pickup tube and oil pump.

DISASSEMBLY

1. Drain oil from pump, then remove suction pipe and screen assembly.
2. Remove oil pump cover and gears, Fig. 9.
3. Carefully remove pressure regulator valve plug or cotter pin, then the valve spring and valve.

INSPECTION

1. Clean all pump components in suitable solvent.
2. Inspect pump housing and cover for damage or casting imperfections. Replace housing if necessary.
3. Inspect idler gear shaft fit in housing. If shaft fits loosely, replace pump or timing chain cover as needed.
4. Inspect pressure regulator valve for damaging or sticking. Small burrs may be removed with an oil stone.
5. Install pressure regulator valve spring for loss of tension or damage and replace as necessary.
6. Inspect suction pipe and screen for looseness or damage and replace as necessary.
7. Inspect gears for damage and replace as necessary.
8. Inspect driveshaft for looseness or excessive wear and replace as necessary.

ASSEMBLY

1. Lubricate all internal components with clean engine oil.
2. Pack all pump cavities with petroleum jelly, then install the gears. Ensure mark on gears faces timing cover.
3. Install cover and gasket, then the pressure regulator valve and spring.
4. Apply Loctite sealant to pressure regulator valve plug threads, then install the plug and torque to 21 ft.lbs.

INSTALLATION

1. Install oil pump using a new gasket.
2. Install pickup tube and support using a new O-ring.
3. Install oil pan, then a new front seal using tool No. J36534 or equivalent.
4. Install new oil filter, then reconnect oil pressure switch electrical connector.
5. Install rear timing belt cover and crankshaft gear.
