Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Mark relationship between rear wheel and hub, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove brake drum detent screw, then the brake drum. If drum is difficult to remove, proceed as follows:
a. Ensure parking brake cable is released.
b. Loosen parking brake cable.
c. Remove access hole plug from backing plate, then move parking brake lever until lever stop rests on brake shoe.
4. Remove spring connecting link, then the adjuster actuator and actuator spring, Fig. 1.
5. Press brake shoes outward slightly and remove adjuster assembly.
6. Remove hold-down springs, washers and pins using a suitable tool.
7. Remove brake shoes from backing plate and parking brake cable.
8. Remove lower return spring.

INSTALLATION
1. Lubricate backing plate at points shown, Fig. 2.
2. Connect parking brake lever to parking brake cable.
3. Ensure parking brake cable is properly routed, then install shoes and lining to backing plate with hold-down spring, washer and pin.
4. Position adjuster shoe and lining and lower return spring against backing plate. Ensure spring is properly positioned under anchor plate.
5. Install hold-down spring, washer and pin.

6. Turn adjuster in to stop, then install adjuster assembly, Fig. 3. Ensure spring clip is positioned toward backing plate.
7. Install adjuster actuator onto pin and actuator spring.
8. Install spring connecting link to pin and press into brake hole.
9. Connect upper spring from connecting link to brake shoe.
10. Install brake drum and detent screw, then the wheel and tire assembly.
11. Adjust service and parking brakes as necessary.
