Subject: SERVICE MANUAL REVISION FUEL TANK DRAINING PROCEDURE SECTION 6C

Models

Affected: 1988 GRAND PRIX
The procedure for "Draining the Fuel Tank" in this bulletin is to be used in place of the procedure printed in the 1988 Grand Prix Service Manual. A new procedure is required for draining fuel tanks. Fuel must be drained through the filler vent tube at the fuel tank. Do not attempt to drain fuel through the filler neck, as damage to the filler neck check ball will occur.

Figure 6C-5 Fuel Filler Neck and Filler Vent Tube:

DRAINING FUEL TANK

NOTICE: Do not attempt to drain fuel from the tank through the fuel tank filler neck, as damage to the filler neck check ball will occur.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Place a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher, and no smoking indicators near a well ventilated work area.
2. Remove fuel filler cap.
3. Raise car on hoist.
4. Clean all pipe and hose connections and surrounding areas before disconnecting, to avoid possible contamination of the fuel system.
5. Disconnect filler vent tube from tank. See Figure 6C-5.
6. Use a hand operated approved for gasoline pump device to drain as much fuel as possible through the filler vent tube.
7. If a hand operated pump device cannot be used to complete the draining process, use a siphon on the main (not return) fuel pipe at the fuel level sender unit, and drain into a gasoline approved container.

CAUTION: Never drain or store gasoline in an open container due to the possibility of fire or explosion.

8. Reconnect filler vent tube to rubber hose. Position hose clamp onto hose, with screws to the outside, heads to the bottom. Place clamp on hose vertically as shown in Figure 6C-5, and secure hose to tube with clamp.
9. Reinstall any removed hoses, lines and cap.
