Caliper Removal

For additional information see Removal Notes. Fundamentals and Basics

NOTE: If any hydraulic component is removed or disconnected, it may be necessary to bleed all or part of the brake system.

CAUTION: Brake fluid will damage painted surfaces. Brake fluid can also damage electrical connections. Shop cloths and clean containers should be used to prevent spillage of brake fluid.

1. Remove approximately 2/3 of brake fluid from master cylinder.
2. Raise vehicle and support on jack stands.
3. Mark relationship of wheel to hub and bearing assembly.
4. Remove rear wheels.
5. Reinstall two wheel nuts to retain rotor to hub and bearing assembly.
6. Loosen tension on parking brake cable at equalizer.

Parking Brake Cable Attachment:

7. Remove cable (27) and return spring (3) from lever (2)
8. Remove lock nut (1) while holding lever (2).
9. Remove lever (2), lever seal (6), and anti-friction washer (7).
10. Inspect lever, lever seal, and anti-friction washer for cuts, nicks and excessive wear. Replace part(s) if found.

Caliper Assembly:

Compressing Piston:

CAUTION: Do not allow pliers to contact actuator screw.

11. Bottom piston (17) into caliper bore to provide clearance between linings and rotor.

^ Position 12 inch adjustable pliers (28) over caliper mounting bracket (31) and inboard caliper housing (25).
12. Reinstall anti-friction washer (7), lever seal (6) (sealing bead against housing), lever (2) and nut (1).

Caliper Attachment:

CAUTION: Do not crimp brake hose, as this may damage internal structure.

13. Remove bolt (30) attaching inlet fitting (29), only if caliper is to be removed from vehicle for unit repair (overhaul). If only shoe and linings are being replaced, there is no need to disconnect inlet fitting. Plug openings in caliper and pipe to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
14. Remove boots (10), mounting bolts (8), and sleeves (9) using No. 50 Torx wrench.
15. Remove caliper (25) from rotor and mounting bracket (31). If only shoe and linings are being replaced, suspend with a wire book from strut.

16. Inspect Caliper
^ Mounting bolts and sleeves (1) for corrosion.
^ Bushings (2) for cuts or nicks.
^ If damage to either part is found, replace with new parts when installing caliper.
