Steering Column - Removal and Installation
CHEVROLET REAR WHEEL DRIVE EXC. CHEVETTE
REMOVAL
Except. 1984---87 Corvette
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove nut and bolt from upper intermediate shaft coupling, then separate coupling from lower end of steering column.
3. Disconnect shift linkage from lower shift lever.
4. Remove left lower instrument panel trim and/or lap cooler duct, then disconnect all electrical wire connectors from steering column.
5. Remove screws attaching toe plate to dash panel.
6. Remove nuts attaching steering column bracket to instrument panel.
7. Disconnect shift position indicator cable, if equipped with automatic transmission, then withdraw steering column from vehicle.

1. Assemble lower dash cover (A) to seal with two ``carrots'' (part of seal), then loosely assemble lower (A) and upper (B) dash cover with screws (C) and (D) making certain that dash cover slides on column, Fig. 7.
2. Attach bracket (E) to jacket and install bolt (F) first, (G) second and (H) and (J) last and torque to 30 lb ft
3. Connect ignition switch electrical connector, then position column in vehicle and onto flex coupling rag joint. Install washers (K) and nuts (L) and torque to 30 lb ft
4. Loosely install nuts (M), then position lower cover to dash using screw (N) and install screw (R).
5. Torque screws (R) and (N) to 45 lb in then install and torque screws (S) and (T) to 45 lb in
6. Torque clamps screws to (C) and (D) to 45 lb in, then install and torque remaining cover screws to 45 lb in
7. Torque nuts (M) to 20 lb ft

For removal and installation procedures on Parisienne, 1985---86 Bonneville & 1985---87 Grand Prix models, refer to Chevrolet Rear Wheel Drive Except. Chevette.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove bolt securing upper intermediate shaft joint to steering shaft.
2. Disconnect shift linkage from shift lever.
3. Remove lower instrument panel trim covers, and if column is to be disassembled, the steering wheel.
4. Remove toe plate cover and toe plate mounting screws and clamp bolt, noting installation position for assembly.
5. On column shift auto. trans., disconnect shift indicator cable from column shift bowl, Fig. 16.
6. Disconnect neutral start and back-up light switch and turn signal connector.
7. Support column and disconnect column bracket assembly.
8. Lower column enough to disconnect electrical connections. If spacers are used, retain for use during installation.
9. Carefully remove column from vehicle and disconnect intermediate shaft from steering shaft.
