Speedometer Head: Testing and Inspection
1. If the speedometer reads "0" all the time, remove both connectors from the vehicle speed sensor buffer. Plug both of these connectors into connector J-33431-8 of I/P tester J-33431. With the tester set to "ON," "54 mph," and "60 HZ" and the ignition switch in "RUN," the speedometer should read 54 mph +/-2 mph.^ If the speedometer reads correctly, the fault is in the vehicle speed sensor circuit.
^ If the speedometer reads incorrectly, measure the voltage between the LT GRN /BLK of buffer connector and ground.
^ If battery voltage is found, replace the instrument panel.
^ If battery voltage is not measured, check the LT GRN/BLK wire between the vehicle speed sensor buffer and the instrument panel. If the wire is OK, check the printed circuit. replace the instrument panel if the printed circuit is OK.
2. If the speedometer indicates vehicle speed, but not correct speed, check for:
^ Correct tier inflation.
^ Correct tire size.
^ Correct speedometer drive gears in transaxle.
^ If these are correct, perform the electrical diagnosis in step 1.
3. If both the speedometer and odometers do not operate, perform the electrical diagnosis in step 1.
4. If either the speedometer or both the odometers work but not all 3, replace the speedometer assembly.
