Refer to Diesel Engine Performance Specifications chart for specified injection pump timing.
1. Check that alignment mark on injection pump flange is aligned with alignment mark on front plate.
2. Bring cylinder No. 1 to TDC on compression stroke by turning crankshaft until timing mark on pulley aligns with pointer, Fig. 1. The damper pulley has eleven notched lines as shown in Fig. 1. Four lines on one side, seven elsewhere. The four lines are intended for service use while the other seven are for factory use only.
3. Remove upper dust cover, ensure the injection pump belt is properly tensioned and the timing marks are aligned.
4. Remove the cam cover and rear plug, ensure that the fixing plate fits smoothly into the camshaft rear slit, then remove the fixing plate.
5. Disconnect the injection pipe from the injection pump, remove distributor head screw and gasket, install static timing gauge J-29763, Fig. 2. Set the lift approximately .040 inch (1 mm) from the plunger.
6. Bring No. 1 piston to a point 45°-60° BTDC by turning the crankshaft, set dial indicator to zero. Turn crankshaft slightly in both directions, ensuring gauge indication is stable.
7. Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until the specified timing mark on the damper is aligned with the timing pointer, Fig. 1. Note reading of dial indicator, if reading is not .020 inch (.5 mm), hold crankshaft at specified degrees and loosen the two nuts on injection pump flange, Fig. 3. Move pump until reading on dial indicator is .020 inch (.5 mm), then tighten nuts.
