Power Steering Gear Inlet Pipe/Hose Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight forward position, support it from movement, and remove the key from the ignition.
2. Remove the intake manifold cover. Refer to Intake Manifold Cover Replacement Intake Manifold Cover Replacement.
3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Service and Repair.
4. Remove the washer solvent container. Refer to Windshield Washer Solvent Container Replacement Service and Repair.
5. Remove the drive belt idler pulley bolt and the pulley.
6. Remove the 3 bolts and the engine lift bracket.
7. Remove the power steering pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
8. Remove the power steering pump and gear inlet pipe/hoses routing clip nut at the generator.
Separate the power steering gear inlet pipe/hose from the routing clip.
9. Position a drain pan under the power steering pump and the power steering gear.
10. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet pipe/hose fitting from the power steering pump. Discard the O-ring seal.
11. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
Warning
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.
12. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt and separate the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
13. Place a jack stand at the rear of the cradle support.
14. Remove the 2 rear cradle support bolts.
15. Using the jack stand, lower the rear of the cradle support for clearance.
16. Remove the 2 power steering gear heat shield bolts and the shield.
17. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet pipe/hose fitting from the steering gear. Discard the O-ring seal.
18. Remove the power steering gear inlet pipe/hose from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Position the power steering gear inlet pipe/hose to the vehicle.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
2. Using a new O-ring seal, connect the power steering gear inlet pipe/hose fitting to the steering gear and tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb ft).
3. Position the steering gear heat shield, install the 2 bolts, and tighten to 14 Nm (124 lb in).
4. Using the jack stand, raise the rear of the cradle support.
5. Install the 2 rear cradle support bolts and tighten to 165 Nm (122 lb ft).
6. Remove the jack stand.
7. Position the intermediate shaft to the steering gear, install the pinch bolt, and tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb ft).
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Using a new O-ring seal, connect the power steering gear inlet pipe/hose fitting to the steering gear and tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb ft).
10. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
11. Position the power steering gear inlet pipe/hose to the routing clip, install the nut, and tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb in).
12. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
13. Position the engine lift bracket, install the 3 bolts, and tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
14. Position the drive belt idler pulley, install the bolt, and tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
15. Install the washer solvent container. Refer to Windshield Washer Solvent Container Replacement Service and Repair.
16. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Service and Repair.
17. Install the intake manifold cover. Refer to Intake Manifold Cover Replacement Intake Manifold Cover Replacement.
18. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding Service and Repair.
