Transaxle Case Side Cover
Case Side Cover, Oil Pump, And Control Valve Body.:
Removal
1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
2. Disconnect cruise control vacuum hoses at servo.
3. Disconnect transaxle neutral start switch connector.
4. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
5. Remove left front wheel and tire assembly.
6. Remove inner splash shield.
7. Remove tie rod end from knuckle assembly.
8. Remove stabilizer shaft link from lower control arm.
9. Remove ball joint from steering knuckle.
NOTICE: Drive axle seal protector J 34754 should be modified and installed on any drive axle prior to service procedures on or near the drive axle. Failure to observe this can result in seal damage and possible joint failure.
10. Remove drive axle from transaxle.
11. Remove pinch bolt from steering gear intermediate shaft.
CAUTION: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.
12. Remove intermediate shaft from steering gear.
13. Position a transmission jack under transaxle oil pan. Raise jack until it supports the transaxle.
14. Four frame-to-body bolts.
15. Lower the transmission jack and transaxle to gain access to the case side cover.
16. Remove oil cooler pipes at case.
17. Remove side cover bolts
18. Remove case side cover.
Inspection
Clean case and side cover gasket surfaces.
Installation
1. Install new gaskets on case.
2. Install side cover and new bolts.
3. Install oil cooler pipes. Tighten side cover bolts to 9-13 N-m (80-115 lb.in.).
4. Raise transaxle so frame bolts can be installed.
5. Install four frame-to-body bolts. Tighten to 140 N-m (103 lb.ft.)
6. Remove transmission jack.
7. Install intermediate shaft to steering gear.
8. Install pinch bolt at intermediate shaft.
9. Install drive axle.
10. Install ball joint to steering knuckle.
11. Install drive axle seal protectors.
12. Install stabilizer shaft link to lower control arm.
13. Install tie rod end to knuckle.
14. Install inner splash shield.
15. Install left front wheel and tire assembly.
16. Lower vehicle.
17. Connect transaxle neutral start switch connector.
18. Attach cruise control servo vacuum hoses.
19. Connect battery negative cable.
