Shift Cable: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Place parking brake in the up position.
2. Place gearshift in the Autostick position.
3. Remove gearshift set screw.
4. Using a trim stick, disengage gearshift bezel from lower console.
5. Disconnect bezel lamp connector.
6. Remove front console retaining screw.
7. Open console bin cover and remove console retaining screws (Fig. 249).
8. Carefully remove console from vehicle.
9. Loosen nut on gearshift cable adjust lever (Fig. 250).
10. Remove retaining clip from shift cable conduit bracket (Fig. 251).
11. Disconnect shifter cable from cable attach stud (pin).
12. Remove cable from center console routing. Leave flat on floor for ease of removal.
13. Remove driver's side seat.
14. Pull back carpeting from rear seat compartment on left side.
15. Locate and drill out rivets that attach cable retaining clips to the driver's side compartment.
16. Unseat grommet and remove cable from interior of vehicle.
17. Loosen bolt that clamps shift cable to transaxle.
18. Disconnect gearshift cable from shift lever assembly at transaxle.
19. Remove cable from underneath vehicle.
INSTALLATION
1. Reroute new cable from underside of vehicle. The cable must be routed correctly to ensure proper operation.
2. Snap new transaxle cable on to gearshift lever assembly at transaxle.
3. Set gearshift lever assembly in park position at transaxle. This is the most rearward position.
CAUTION: Park sprag must be engaged when adjusting linkage. Rock vehicle back and forth to ensure that park sprag is fully engaged.
4. Place conduit end fitting in clamp and tighten mounting bolt.
5. Route transaxle shift cable through hole in seat compartment panel (Fig. 252).
6. Install cable grommet.
7. Route under carpeting and to the gearshift mechanism.
8. Fasten gearshift cable retaining clips to driver's compartment with rivets.
9. Place shifter in the Park position.
10. Route cable through hole in gearshift mechanism and attach to cable attaching stud (pin) by snapping into place.
11. Install a new clip onto the cable at the gearshift mechanism.
12. Tighten the adjuster nut.
13. Reinstall console, bezel and gearshift handle. Hold shifter button in while tightening handle. This will locate handle properly,
14. Install driver's side seat.
15. Check shifter for proper operation. It should operate smoothly without binding. The vehicle should crank in Park or Neutral only.
