Parking Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

NOTE: Before proceeding with this procedure,

1. Raise vehicle.

NOTE: When removing the center cap from the wheel do not use a sharp or hard tool. Use of such a tool can damage the finish on the wheel and damage the center cap.





2. Remove center cap from wheel. Center cap is removed by inserting a trim stick into notch on center can and prying it off wheel.
3. Remove wheel and tire assembly.





4. Remove the 2 bolts mounting rear disc brake caliper to caliper adapter.





5. Remove disc brake caliper from caliper adapter. Caliper is removed by first rotating free end of caliper away from caliper adapter. Then with free end of caliper rotated away from adapter, lift caliper off machined abutment on adapter.





6. Support disc brake caliper by hanging it from shock absorber bracket on frame. Caliper is supported using wire or a tie strap. Do not let flex hose support the weight of the brake caliper, damage to flex hose can occur.

NOTE: If rotor retainers are on the wheel mounting studs they must be remove before attempting to remove rotor. They do not need to be installed when rotor is installed back on hub bearing.

7. Remove rotor from hub/hearing.





8. Remove the lower return spring from the park brake shoes.





9. Remove park brake shoe adjuster from bottom of park brake sheer.





10. Remove the hold down clip from the park brake shoes.





NOTE: When removing park brake shoes and upper return spring from caliper adapter position the hub so the wheel mounting studs are at 11 and 1 O'clock as shown.

11. Remove park brake shoes and upper return spring as an assembly from the caliper adapter.
12. Separate the park brake shoes and upper return spring.

INSTALLATION
1. Assemble the upper return spring to the park brake shoes with the park brake shoes off the vehicle.





2. Install park brake shoes and upper return spring as an assembly on caliper adapter.





3. Install hold down clip on each park brake shoe.





4. Install the adjuster at the bottom of the park brake shoes.





5. Install the lower return spring on the park brake shoes.
6. Adjust the park brake shoes to a diameter of 194 mm (7.50 inch).
7. Install brake rotor on hub bearing.





8. Install disc brake caliper on caliper adapter, reversing the removal procedure.





9. Install disc brake caliper to caliper adapter mounting bolts. Tighten mounting bolts to a torque of 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
10. Install wheel and tire assembly
11. Tighten wheel mounting nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half specification. Then repeat tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
12. Install center cap on the wheel.
13. Lower vehicle.
14. Road test vehicle and test for proper operation of parking brake.
