Flex Fuel Vehicles - Fuel Filter Maintenance

NO.: 14-02-93
GROUP: Fuel
DATE: Mar. 5, 1993

SUBJECT:
Fuel Filter Maintenance Flex Fuel Vehicles

MODELS:

1993 (AA) Spirit/Acclaim

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES WITH 2.5L-FFV (Sales Code EDN) OR A "V" IN THE EIGHTH POSITION OF THE VIN.

DISCUSSION:

Because the fuels used in flex fuel vehicles have a much stronger solvent characteristic than gasoline, they are more prone to carrying dirt and contaminant particles in suspension. This characteristic may result in the necessity to replace the fuel filter more frequently than gasoline only fueled vehicles.

It is recommended that the fuel pressure drop across the fuel filter be checked on flex fuel vehicles every 7,500 miles after accumulating 15,000 miles. Refer to the procedure outlined on pages 14-7 and 14-8 of the 1993 Front Wheel Drive Car Electrical, Fuel & Emissions Service Manual, Publication Number 81-270-3102.

If the pressure drop is 5 PSI or less the system is ok. If the pressure drop is over 5 PSI but less than 10 PSI, replace the fuel filter using the procedure outlined on pages 14-9 and 14-10 of the 1993 Front Wheel Drive Car Electrical, Fuel & Emissions Service Manual. If the pressure drop is greater than 10 PSI, replace the fuel filter, flush out the fuel tank and replace the in tank fuel strainer, refer to page 14-9 of the 1993 Front Wheel Drive Car Electrical, Fuel & Emissions Service Manual for the procedure outlining fuel pump strainer replacement, and page 14-14 for fuel tank removal and installation information.

After the fuel filter is replaced, the vehicle can be allowed to accumulate 15,000 miles before the filter needs to checked again, then every 7,500 miles.

Failure to perform this check and any service indicated to be necessary by the results of the check, may result in a loss of fuel pressure and/or shortened fuel pump life.

Failure of the customer to have or to perform this recommended service will not impact the emissions warranty of the fuel system components which remain as described in the warranty booklet.
