Disassembly/Assembly
DISASSEMBLY1. Remove steering column assembly, refer to Removal/Installation.
2. Pry out wiring trough retainers, then remove trough.
3. Protect paint using masking tape, back-up shift lever retaining pin with deep socket, then drive out retaining pin and remove shift lever. Remove breakaway capsules from steering column bracket, then mount column in vise, taking care not to damage bracket.
Fig. 22 Exploded View Of Upper Steering Column. RWD W/Standard Steering Column:
4. Remove two screws securing cover to lock housing and the cover.
5. Remove windshield washer/wiper switch.
6. Pull hider up on control stalk and remove two screws securing control stalk sleeve to washer/wiper switch, rotate control stalk fully clockwise and pull control from turn signal switch.
7. Remove turn signal switch and upper bearing retainer screws and the retainer, lift switch up and position aside, then disconnect horn and ignition key lamp ground wires, as equipped.
8. Remove retaining screw and position ignition key lamp aside.
9. Remove four screws securing upper bearing housing to lock housing, steering shaft snap ring and the bearing housing.
10. Remove spring and steering lockplate, then withdraw steering shaft from lower end of column.
11. Remove retaining screw and lift out key warning switch.
12. Remove ignition switch retaining screws, rotate switch 90° and slide switch off actuating rod.
13. Remove screws securing bellcrank and slide bellcrank up in lock housing until it can be disconnected from ignition switch actuating rod.
14. With ignition lock in L position, depress spring retainers and pull lock from column.
15. Pull lock lever and spring assembly straight out of housing.
16. Remove four lock housing retaining screws and the lockplate.
17. Rotate lock housing 90° and remove housing from column.

18. Loosen setscrew securing shift tube, withdraw shift tube from lower end of column, then remove floor plate and grommet.
INSPECTION
1. Inspect all components and replace any that are damaged, distorted or excessively worn.
2. Inspect switches and related harnesses, replacing assemblies that are worn, damaged or distorted.
3. Inspect steering shaft support bearings and replace if they are worn or fail to operate smoothly.
4. If shift tube is to be reused, inspect seal and support bushing and replace as needed.
5. Clamp column in vise taking care not to damage bracket and inspect rivets securing column to mandrel.
6. Drill out any loose rivets and replace with 1/8 inch diameter, 1/4 inch long aluminum "pop" rivets, with 1/8 inch grip. Do not use steel rivets to secure mandrel to column, as the rivets must be able to shear on impact.
ASSEMBLY
Lubricate steering shaft support bearings and column friction surfaces with Grade 2 E.P. multipurpose grease prior to assembly.
1. Install toe plate and grommet on lower end of column.
2. Slide gearshift housing extension onto column, if equipped, with tabs facing upper end of column.
3. Position gearshift housing on upper end of column, ensuring support is properly seated against mast jacket tabs.
4. Ensure dust sleeve and support bushing are properly installed, then slide shift tube in from lower end of column, guiding key on upper end of tube into slot in gearshift housing.
5. Hold shift tube and housing together firmly, then tighten setscrew to secure shift tube.
6. Position crossover load spring and gearshift lever in housing, then secure lever with retaining pin.
7. Assemble key cylinder plunger and spring, then install plunger and spring assembly and shift gate on lock housing.
8. Insert ignition switch rod through shift housing.
9. Place shift lever in mid-position and position lock housing assembly on mast jacket, guiding ignition switch rod through oval shaped hole and indexing keyway in housing with slot in jacket.
10. Insert four lock housing retaining screws and tighten screws alternately and evenly, torquing screws to 90 inch lbs. in several steps.
Fig. 24 Lock Lever & Spring Assembly:
11. Lubricate and assemble lock lever and spring assembly, then install assembly in lock, seating pin firmly in bottom of slots and ensuring spring leg is in place in lock casting notch.
12. Place gearshift lever in P position, position bellcrank assembly into lock housing and insert ignition switch actuating rod into bellcrank while pulling actuator rod down column, then install bellcrank into mounting surface.
13. Install ignition switch onto actuator rod and rotate switch 90° to lock actuating rod position.
14. Rotate ignition lock to L position and remove key. Insert lock cylinder into bore until it contacts switch actuator, then insert key and rotate cylinder while pressing inward until components align and cylinder snaps into place.
15. Feed key warning switch harness behind post and down through channel between housing and mast jacket, then remove ignition key and secure switch.
16. Lubricate inside of steering shaft lockplate, then install lockplate and spring.
17. Ensure bearing is properly seated in upper bearing housing, then install upper bearing housing and retaining screws and torque screws to specifications.
18. Press steering shaft into column to compress springs and install upper bearing snap ring.
Fig. 25 Column Mounted Dimmer Switch Installation. W/Standard Steering Column:
19. Reverse remaining procedure to complete assembly, noting the following:
a. Install dimmer switch actuator rod up through housing into pocket of washer/wiper switch, then compress switch and install 0.093 inch rod into adjusting hole. Mount switch and apply slightly upward pressure against actuator rod, then tighten retaining screws and remove rod from hole.
b. Ensure switch harnesses are properly aligned, then install wiring trough. Secure trough with new retainers.
