Fluid Drain and Refill
Fluid and filter changes or band adjustments are not required for average passenger car use. Severe usage such as police, taxi, trailer towing or prolonged operation in city traffic, requires that fluid and filter be changed and bands adjusted every 15,000 miles.Whenever the factory fill fluid is changed, only fluids of the type labeled Mopar atf plus 4 (Type 7176) should be used. Dexron II automatic transmission fluid should be used only if the recommended fluid is not available.
1. Remove drain plug (if equipped) from transmission oil pan and drain oil. If the oil pan does not have a drain plug, loosen pan bolts and tap pan with a soft mallet to break it loose, permitting fluid to drain.
2. Remove transmission oil pan, replace filter or clean intake screen and pan, adjust bands and reinstall.
3. Add approximately four quarts of automatic transmission fluid through filler tube.
4. Start engine.
5. Allow engine to idle for about two minutes. With parking brake applied, move selector lever momentarily to each position and place in N, then check and adjust fluid level as required.
