Steering: Service and Repair
Fig. 7 C-3309-E Gauge Installations:
1. Ensure fluid level and drive belt tension are correct, disconnect high pressure hose at steering gear and connect free end of hose to gauge side of gauge C-3309-E or equivalent.
2. Connect a second pressure hose from valve side of C-3309-E to steering gear. Valve must be installed on outlet side of gauge.
3. Insert a thermometer into fluid reservoir, start engine and allow fluid to reach a temperature between 150 and 170°F. Turn wheels from stop to stop to aid in warming fluid. Do not hold wheels against stop for an extended period. Internal pump overheating may result.
4. With engine at idle speed and gauge valve open, note pressure while turning wheel to one stop momentarily.
5. If pressure is less than specified, momentarily close shut-off valve and note pressure. If pressure is less than specified, pump is faulty.
6. If pressure is low in step 4 and satisfactory in step 5, steering gear is defective.
7. Shut engine Off, remove tool C-3309-E, reconnect pressure hose, then perform repairs if necessary.
