SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Rattling noise in steering wheel when hitting a sharp bump or during rough road operation.
DIAGNOSIS
Road test the vehicle over a rough road and listen for a rattling noise in the upper portion of the steering column. If a rattle is detected, it could be caused by the steering column dampener contacting the inside of the steering column.
PARTS REQUIRED
1 Seal PN 4270881
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure is to install an insulator around the dampener weight to correct the noise. The windshield wiper motor seal is used as the insulator as follows:
1. Remove steering wheel and dampener weight assembly.

2. Install the insulator, PN 4270881, on the outer perimeter of the lead weights as shown in Figure 1.
3. Reinstall steering wheel assembly and torque nut to 61 N-m (45 foot pounds).
4. Road test the vehicle to assure that the rattle is fixed.
