Recall - Excessive HC and CO Emissions: Overview

9217chrysler02

No.: 500, 501

February, 1992

To:
All Dodge and Chrysler-Plymouth Dealers

Subject:
Emissions Recalls # 500 & # 501 - HC and CO Emissions

Models:
1986 Model Year Plymouth Horizon, Plymouth Turismo, Dodge Omni and Dodge Charger Equipped With 2.2L Carbureted Engine and Federal Emission Control System

Vehicles involved in the service requirement defined in this letter are divided into two groups, (Recalls # 500 and # 501). A different owner notification letter format will be used for each group to evaluate owner response. Dealer service requirements are the same for both groups.

The involved vehicles may emit hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) in excess of Federal Emissions Standard limits. To correct the condition, the following service is required:

^ Replace sintered metal type choke vacuum delay valve with orificed valve,

^ Install a vacuum switch and harness to control air switching during deceleration and low speed operation,

^ Install a revised hose routing label.

Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.

Note:
As an additional service aid, a videotape demonstrating the service procedure is included in the October, 1991 Master Tech program.

Vehicle List

Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive two vehicle lists with this letter (for Recalls # 500 and # 501). Each list is arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

Each Dodge or Chrysler-Plymouth dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by Compak Mail for use in performing the service on involved vehicles upon request.

Parts

Important:
A quantity of parts will be distributed initially and billed to all involved dealers. This quantity will cover a portion of the total vehicles involved. Additional parts may be ordered as needed to support customer demand.

Each dealer to whom vehicles in the recalls were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive enough Emissions Service Parts Packages, Recall PN C3940458, to service 25 % of those vehicles.

Each package contains the following components:

Quantity Description

(1) Choke vacuum delay valve
(1) Vacuum switch and harness
(1) Hose routing label

Also included in each package is an instruction summary for convenient reference by the servicing technician.

Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners in both recall groups who are known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. A standard format letter will be sent to owners in Recall # 500 and a question/answer format will be sent for Recall # 501. Owners are requested to schedule appointments for the service with their dealers at the earliest possible date. A copy of each owner notification letter is included.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Recall Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.
