SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Intermittent tachometer operation, usually during cold ambient temperatures, may be due to loose connections at the instrument cluster printed circuit board. The pins with the loose connection are the tachometer drive module pins, and the problem may be at either end of the pin (at drive module or at pin-to-board crimp). To correct this condition a new printed circuit board has been released both for production and for the field. This board uses larger tach drive pins for a tighter connection.

PARTS REQUIRED

1 - Printed Circuit Board PN 4051899

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove instrument cluster per service manual procedures.

2. Remove tachometer drive module from rear of cluster (Figure 1).

3. Remove printed circuit board and replace with new Printed Circuit Board PN 4051899 (Figure 1).

4. Inspect tachometer drive module terminals. If any are flattened, pull terminals out with paper clip, etc. to assure proper contact is made when installing module to printed circuit board (Figure 2).

5. Carefully install tachometer drive module over printed circuit board pins and locator. If square hole in drive module doesn't line up with locator, remove module and reinstall. Do not try and force or twist drive module to fit over locator. then-positioned properly, hole in drive module will easily align with locator on instrument cluster. Reinstall drive module screw.

6. Reinstall instrument cluster using service manual procedures.
