SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Some vehicles built prior to February 1, 1984, may exhibit a binding condition in the front suspension dual path strut mount. The binding condition may cause a low pitched chatter noise and/or front spring pop as the steering wheel is turned during low speed or parking maneuvers. The binding is caused by the strut mount bearing sealing lip having excessive interference on the upper spring seat (Figure 1).
DIAGNOSIS

This condition can be diagnosed by observing the spring seat bind and then release itself (chatter) as another person cycles the steering wheel from lock to lock with the vehicle parked. Be sure the vehicle is in park with the parking brake applied.

The chatter can also be felt in the coil spring by holding a free coil of the spring while cycling the steering.

Close inspection of the spring and spring seat is required, as other noises such as power steering or grounded engine mount noises may be incorrectly diagnosed as this binding condition.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

If the binding condition described above is identified to be the problem the following repairs should be performed:
Remove strut assembly and install revised Spring Seat PN 4322701. The revised spring seat will eliminate the seal lip contact to the spring seat. This will require marking the camber adjusting cam and strut to insure proper alignment when reinstalling. Be sure to use the "C" clamp procedure as outlined in the appropriate service manual when reinstalling the strut for proper camber positioning. Follow the strut removal, disassemble, and reinstalling procedure in the appropriate service manual.
