SYMPTOM/CONDITION

A running change was made to the fuel tanks on 1.6L Turbo equipped 1984 Colts beginning with those built in January, 1984. The change involved a reduction in the main fuel pipe diameter at the tank from 12 mm (.43 inches) down to 8mm (.31 inches). Both the standard 10 gallon tank and optional 13 gallon tank were affected. However, the part numbers on the revised fuel tanks were not changed from the original. All replacement tanks are of the revised type.

If the fuel tank must be replaced on a subject model built before January, 1984, an adapter kit must also be used, as described below, to accommodate the smaller fuel pipe.

Installation Procedure

When replacing a fuel tank on one of the subject model vehicles, follow the recommended service manual procedures. It will also be necessary to perform the following (Refer to Figure 1 for installation positions):
1. Remove and discard the original fuel pipe and fuel pipe-to-fuel pump hose, being sure to save the related hose clips and attaching hardware.

2. Install the new fuel pump-to-joint fuel hose (MB348902) and reinstall one of the original hose clips at the pump end of hose.

3. Position the second original hose clip on fuel hose, and install hose on larger diameter nipple of joint (MB348255). Secure joint to the hose by installing clip in proper position.

4. Position two new hose clips (MS660164) on the new joint-to-pipe assembly fuel hose (MS622899), and install hose onto smaller joint nipple. Secure hose to joint by installing one clip into proper position at joint end.

5. Install new pipe assembly (MB348901) and insert into hose from joint. Secure hose to pipe by installing remaining clip into proper position.
